Description

The Char Dham ("four abodes") is a set of four pilgrimage sites in India. Every Hindu must visit the Char Dhams during one's lifetime they are Badrinath, Dwaraka, Puri and Rameswaram.

The small circuit in Uttarakhand of four pilgrimage places Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath is referred to as Chota Char Dham.


Places to Visit

  • Sri Kedarnath-
  • At an altitude of 3,581 mts., one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, is a scenic spot situated, against the backdrop of the majestic Sri Kedarnathji range. According to Hindu legends, the temple was initially built by Pandavas, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas, the holiest Hindu shrines of Shiva.

    The temple is open to the general public only between April – November.


  • Sri Badrinath–
  • Another holy place of Hindus ,one of the four sites in India's Char Dham pilgrimage and gets its name from the temple of Badrinath. Badrinath situated at an elevation of 3,133 mts in Chamoli district in the state of Uttarakhand, India. Badrinath was established as a major pilgrimage site by Adi Shankara in the 8th century.

    According to legend Shankar discovered a black stone image of Lord Badrinarayan made of Saligram stone in the Alaknanda River.

    May to October every year the temple usually remains open for public.


  • Yamunotri -
  • The source of the Yamuna River, situated at an altitude of 3,293 metres (10,804 ft) in the Garhwal Himalayas. One of the four sites in India's Chhota Char Dham pilgrimage. According to the ancient legend, sage Asit Muni had his hermitage here. All his life, he bathed daily both in the Ganges and the Yamuna.

    The Yamunotri Temple and the place opens every year on the auspicious day of the Akshaya Tritya.


  • Gangotri-
  • A Hindu pilgrim town on the banks of the river Bhagirathi and origin of River Ganges. According to popular Hindu legend, Goddess Ganga descended when Lord Shiva released the mighty river from the locks of his hair. In the pilgrimage journey of Chota Char Dham, Gangotri is often visited after Yamunotri. The temple is closed from Diwali day every year and is reopened in May.


  • Puri-
  • Puri , one of the four sites in India's Char Dham, located in the state of Odisha, India.The holy land of Lord Jagannatha, also known by the popular vernacular name Shrikhetra. A tribe known as Lohabahu converted to Buddhism and built a temple with an idol of Buddha which is now worshipped as Jagannatha. Construction of the present Jagannatha Temple started in 1136 AD and completed in the 12th century.

    The temple tower height of 58 metres,and The temple complex covers an area of 10.7 acres.

    The famous Ratha Yatra,(journey of chariots), taken over a distance of 3 kilometres every year in Asadha Sukla Dwitiya day, allowing the public to have darśana.


  • Rameswaram-
  • According to legends, this is the place where Lord Ram, Laxman and Hanuman built a bridge to reach Sri Lanka to rescue Maa Sita who had been abducted earlier by the ruler of Sri Lanka Ravan.

    Rameswaram located in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. One of the twelve Jyotirlingas.

    Rameswaram is the closest point from which to reach Sri Lanka and geological evidence suggests that the Rama Sethu was a former land connection between India and Sri Lanka.

    Rameswaram temple, believed to have been consecrated by Shri Rama Chandra. Rameswaram is significant for the Hindus as a pilgrimage to Benaras is incomplete without a pilgrimage to Rameswaram. The presiding deity here is in the form of a Linga with the name Sri Ramanatha Swamy.


  • Dwarka-
  • One of the four dhams , which were founded by Adi shankaracharya. According to legend, Krishna settled here , The city's name means “gateway”. It is also mentioned in the ancient period of the Mahabharata. Dwarka located in the west is in the state of Gujarat, country India.

    Dwaraka was the dwelling place of Lord Krishna. Hindus believe that the original temple was constructed by Vajranabh, the great grand son of Krishna,The Dwarkadhish temple, also known as the Jagat Mandir.

    The Temple spire rises to a height of 78 metres and a large flag with symbols of Sun and Moon.
